“On July 2, 1862, the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Union General Dan Sickles' right leg was shattered at the Peter Trostle farm. The leg was amputated, but Sickles survived the Civil War. He became a champion for memorializing and marking the Gettysburg battlefield. Trostle's house was used as a field hospital during and after the battle. A hole caused by Rebel artillery is still visible in the Trostle barn.”
